Creating an immersive environment, these large-scale pieces engage the viewer in ways a smaller-scale piece cannot. The viewer becomes a participant in the picture, creating an active experience which is more of an encounter. These pieces create a space for a more contemporary engagement with the sublime, with the potentially beautiful/ dangerous experienced at a safe remove. "A Private World on a Sea of Ice" references Caspar david Friedrich's "Polar Sea: Wreck of the Hope" in a more benign, lesiurely experience of nature. "Utah" is painted using an image from a cross-country bicycle trip where the sublime seemed mapped and somewhat tamed by the road. When placed in a gallery context, the image's one-point pespective activates the space, creating the illusion of a deep, almost limitless landscape, eliciting sensations of awe and wonder.
